Our Story

For the hound at your feet & the horse in your heart

We didn't set out to open a shop. We set out to find things — a throw that felt like the west of Ireland instead of a picture of it, a cap from a mill you could name, a piece of silver with an honest story. When we couldn't find them gathered anywhere on this side of the Atlantic, we started gathering them ourselves.

The Hound & Horse is a small house in Ohio with its heart in the Isles. We carry goods from working mills and family makers in Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales — some weaving since before this country existed — and we tell you exactly who made what, and where. If it says Irish, it came from Ireland. That rule doesn't bend.

The name comes from the two animals on Ireland's first coins. In 1928, a new nation put its money where its heart was: a wolfhound on the sixpence, a horse on the half-crown — the hound at your feet and the horse in your heart, struck in silver. We build our own small line around those coins. Every one is bezel-set and removable — never cut, never drilled, never polished into forgetting where it's been. A coin that circulated through Irish pockets for forty years deserves better than a drill bit.

Behind the shop are the two of us: one raised around horses, with the eye — nothing gets on these shelves without her yes; one running the engine — orders, boxes, the occasional midnight DNS record. And usually a wolfhound-sized shadow somewhere underfoot.

We're small on purpose. A few good makers, a few good things from each, chosen slowly. If something here outlasts you and gets argued over by your grandchildren, we've done our job.
